Rated 1 out of 5 by from Couldn't Solve Problem We decided to give Firestone a shot, since they were just down the street from us. We had our rear brakes completely redone about a year ago, because the drivers' rear caliper locked up, and have had a few problems due to the workmanship and quality of parts used. Those were resolved, generally. About 2 months ago, we started hearing a squeaking/squealing noise while driving, as well as could smell and feel the rear brakes getting hot (the same brake that originally had the caliper lock up, in fact, was by far the worst one). The squeaking was intermittent on short trips, but pretty consistent on longer (20+ min) trips, but persisted once it started for the duration of the trip (although stopped squeaking for the short durations whenever the brakes were applied). About a month ago, we took the vehicle to Firestone to have it checked out. Despite "driving" the vehicle for a "long time" on two occasions that day (the second was at my request). The drive to Firestone was 90 minutes (we've moved and there isn't one much closer to us) and it was doing it on the drive there. The Firestone guys couldn't reproduce the problem and said the brakes appeared to be operating normally. OK. On the drive home, not only did they squeaked, but the brakes got so hot that I could smell them. It was about 25 minutes into the drive at this point. I avoided using them as much as possible and we got home safely. It was pretty obvious to me that they didn't try very hard to figure out what was going on -- or in trying to reproduce the problem. The next day I spent about 10 minutes looking for information online. Found out what might be the problem (there happens to be a TSB for this specific model and year vehicle to rectify rear brake drag, with symptoms being exactly what we were experiencing). I scheduled an appointment at the Ford dealer who inspected the brakes (which were fine, despite the pads being not very good quality, for supposedly being top-of-the-line) and concluded that the problem was a combination of the pads that were installed and that TSB (which I had not informed them of ahead of time). Imagine that, they know what they're doing. They replaced the pad and performed the TSB (which just amounts to replacing the rear brake caliper mounts ~ 1 hour of labor) and we have not had any problems since. The customer service at Firestone has generally been good in our encounters, but it's pretty clear to us that we wouldn't take anything serious here, due to lack of caring and expertise.
