Our commitment was born of necessity. Harvey Firestone knew that a great tire wasn’t worth much if a flat meant waiting days for a replacement to ship from the factory. He spent years hand-picking a network of local dealers who could provide immediate, reliable service right in their own neighborhoods. By 1921, the Federal Highway Act ignited a “Golden Age of Roads,” meaning that driving was no longer a novelty but a necessity.
The official story of Firestone Complete Auto Care began in 1926 when Harvey Firestone built a trusted network of neighborhood dealers and pioneered “One‑Stop Service Stations,” expanding beyond tires to add services like gasoline, oil, batteries, and brake linings to deliver the convenience, consistency, and peace of mind drivers needed as cars became essential to daily life. These stores created a road map for merchandising and service.
Over the next decade, service and product offerings grew to include windshield wipers, standardized lubrication, and dynamic brake testing—along with radios, batteries, appliances (yes, like washers and dryers), and even toys. Customer assurances like warranty programs and lifetime guarantees were also introduced. Though not all of these product offerings lasted, the push for convenience and meeting customers’ needs held strong.
As more drivers and trucks hit American roads, the need for total vehicle care grew. Firestone Complete Auto Care met this demand by opening specialized training facilities, including tire repair and battery schools, to turn dealers into industry experts. By the 1930s, thousands of students had been trained in the science of batteries, brakes, and tires. These graduates didn’t just sell products; they also used the latest machinery and proven methods to ensure that every Firestone station provided the same high level of modern, one-stop service.
Between 1930 and 1974, the business grew from 400 stations to 1,300 company-owned stores, keeping pace with the growing interconnectedness of American life. This exponential growth called for standardization, like the strict eight-step process Firestone had in the 1960s that helped gas pump island attendants provide customers with service recommendations and deliver peace of mind.
In 1981, Firestone Complete Auto Care launched a new tier of service with MasterCare. Our “Mastermind” diagnostic computer changed the game with real-time evaluation of vehicle performance. But MasterCare also included something even more impressive: certified service (for a minimum of 3,000 miles) and price guarantees. It was an early glimpse of today’s warranties and tire price match guarantee
Four decades later, Firestone Complete Auto Care’s legacy of commitment to reliable transportation truly came to the fore. During 2020’s COVID-19 lockdowns, Firestone was declared an “essential business,” allowing us to continue serving fleets like DHL and FedEx, as well as first responders—all of whom relied on our products and services to stay on the road safely and dependably.
Today, as part of the Bridgestone family, Firestone Complete Auto Care moves forward into an exciting new landscape of automotive care. With more than 3,500 Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified technicians (and growing), we’re ready to handle modern enhancements across next-generation gas, advanced electric, and hybrid vehicles—not to mention what still lies ahead. A Friendly Greeting—The “Big Step” was greeting every customer with a smile and providing them with a free safety inspection. Then as now, this face-to-face care coupled with thorough inspections give our customers peace of mind.
Battery Repair, Brake Service, and Tire Vulcanizing & Repair—These schools ensured Firestone’s retail locations maintained a reputation of reliable, comprehensive service. Today education is still a top priority for our technicians.
Road Hazards—This pro-rated guarantee went beyond a tire’s manufacturing defects, protecting drivers against unpredictable hazards of the open road, like blowouts. Today, we still take pride in offering our customers dependable warranties.
Auto Radio—These Sparton and Stewart-Warner radio models likely brought the “Voice of Firestone” radio program directly into vehicles. Although Firestone no longer sells radios, we help make sure your ride stays quiet so you can enjoy your radio.
Sealtyte—In 1938, Firestone locations introduced Sealtyte Tubes with internal coatings to prevent air leakage, reducing the frequency of customer maintenance visits and keeping drivers on the road longer.
900—The retail footprint grew steadily from 400 stations in 1930 to more than 1,300 company-owned stores by 1974. Today, there are over 1,800 locations nationwide.
