ENGINE AIR FILTER REPLACEMENT

Help keep the air flowing through your engine clean and clear.

WHAT IS AN ENGINE AIR FILTER?

A car engine requires air for fuel to ignite and combustion to occur. An engine air filter cleans the air that enters the engine to ensure it’s free of dust, dirt, and other environmental contaminants. There are three types of filters you may find in a vehicle: round, conical or flat. Every car is slightly different, but an engine air filter is usually located under the hood inside a plastic box on top or to the side of the engine.

WHEN TO REPLACE AN ENGINE AIR FILTER

Like any other filter, an engine air filter will get dirty and restrictive over time. An air filter filters about 10,000+ gallons of air for every gallon of gas. Generally, an engine filter replacement is recommended between 12,000 and 15,000 miles but check your owner’s manual for a specific recommendation for engine air filter replacement timeframe.

SIGNS YOU NEED AN ENGINE AIR FILTER REPLACEMENT

If you’re unsure when your engine air filter was changed last, there are a few signs to watch for that may indicate it’s time for a new filter. Look out for:

  • Ignition problems: A very dirty filter may prevent the desired amount of air from reaching the combustion chamber, which could lead to reduced performance.
  • Slow acceleration: A very dirty filter holds your car back from reaching its maximum performance potential. If you notice a “jerky” feeling when you try to accelerate, an old filter could be the culprit.
  • It looks grey and dirty: In most modern vehicles, the air filter is located near the engine in a snap-off or bolted-down plastic housing (check your owner’s manual to confirm). If you’re comfortable, you can visually inspect it yourself for signs of excessive debris accumulation.

CAN AN OLD ENGINE AIR FILTER CAUSE ENGINE PROBLEMS?

In short, yes. A clogged air filter will reduce the performance of your engine and could lead to more issues over time. A new filter can contribute to longevity by ensuring your engine is breathing clean air and functioning properly. The cost of replacing an engine air filter depends on the vehicle and the type and size of filter required.

If you want a professional to replace your engine air filter, adding it to an oil change appointment is a common practice. Otherwise, the experts at Firestone Complete Auto Care are available to inspect your current filter and let you know if it’s time for a replacement.
