HOW TO MEASURE YOUR CAR’S RIM SIZE

Learn how to determine the right rim size for your tires.

WHY DOES TIRE SIZE MATTER?

Some believe that rims are just about aesthetics, but they are also an essential component of your wheel construction. If you’re getting new rims but not new tires, you’ll want to make sure you know the rim size to ensure your current tires will fit properly. Choosing the wrong size rims could lead to problems with suspension and damage to your car. Here’s how to find your car’s rim size—or measure it yourself.

HOW TO READ TIRE RIM SIZE

One way to determine the rim size for your vehicle is to look at the alphanumeric tire size code located in the owner’s manual, driver’s side door jamb, or inside the glove box door. Look for a code like P215/65 R15 95H. In this example, the R15 is telling you that your vehicle was originally equipped with 15-inch rims. Rim size and tire size go hand in hand—if you have 15-inch rims, you’ll need 15-inch tires.

If you already have tires on your vehicle, you can also find this number on the sidewall of the tire. It’s usually safe to say that rim size will continue to work for your car. Our tire size guide can help you understand how to read tire size.

CAN I GET BIGGER RIMS?

It’s always a good idea to talk to a professional about your plans before you commit. The tire experts at Firestone Complete Auto Care can help you understand the pros and cons of changing your rim size and help you choose a new set.
